Hospitality Beyond Our Walls: How We’re Helping the Bow Valley Community

Hospitality Beyond Our Walls: How We’re Helping the Bow Valley Community

At Basecamp Resorts, we believe hospitality isn’t just what happens inside our properties, it’s how we show up for our communities.

That belief is at the heart of our ongoing partnership with the Homelessness Society of the Bow Valley (HSBV), a local organization working to ensure everyone in the Bow Valley has a safe, warm place to sleep.

Their work reminds us that even in a place known for beauty and adventure, there are real, local challenges; and real opportunities to help.

A Look at HSBV’s Mission

HSBV is a Canmore-based charity working to support those in the Bow Valley community who are unhoused and housing insecure. Their mission is simple but powerful: to foster a Bow Valley community where everyone has access to shelter and programs that support their needs.

They operate a seasonal Emergency Winter Shelter, which runs from approximately November through April, offering low-barrier access to beds, hot meals, hygiene kits, and donated clothing. Their Outreach Program extends support through phone and email, helping those experiencing housing insecurity access emergency supplies, referrals, and system navigation. In partnership with the Bow Valley Food Bank, Bow Valley Food Alliance, and the Town of Canmore. HSBV also helps run the Community Food Cupboard, providing free, shelf-stable food to anyone who needs it.

In the 2024/2025 Emergency Winter Shelter season, the shelter was open for 151 nights and supported 58 unique individuals. On 71 of those nights, the shelter exceeded its bed capacity. In total, the organization served nearly 937 hot meals and responded to over 130 instances of outreach support.

Why This Work Matters

While the Bow Valley is known for its stunning views and world-class recreation, it’s also a region deeply impacted by a housing crisis and high costs of living. Limited availability, high seasonal costs, and inconsistent employment opportunities make it increasingly difficult for many residents to secure stable housing.

HSBV steps in when no one else can. Their programs not only provide immediate support, they advocate for long-term solutions to support those in the Bow Valley community facing housing insecurity and homelessness. This work is essential in a place where extreme temperatures and high housing costs create significant barriers to safety and stability.

How Basecamp Supports HSBV

Our partnership with HSBV is grounded in the belief that when one part of the community needs support, we step up. One of the most direct ways we do this is by offering overflow shelter at Northwinds Hotel Canmore. When HSBV’s Emergency Winter Shelter reaches capacity or when a hotel setting is more appropriate, such as for families or vulnerable individuals, we provide discounted accommodations through our team at Northwinds. During the 2024/2025 winter season alone, we helped provide 27 nights of safe, warm shelter this way.

We also help keep the shelter running behind the scenes. Each week throughout the season, our laundry team coordinated discounted laundry services for HSBV, ensuring clean, comfortable bedding was available for guests of the shelter. From pickup to delivery, our crew handled every step—because dignity should never come with compromise.

We believe in community connection, too. In 2025, we contributed silent auction items for HSBV’s first Fall Fundraiser. We were also proud Route Sponsors for the Coldest Night of the Year, a nationwide walk-a-thon raising funds for frontline support services. This family-friendly event brings people together each February to walk in solidarity with those facing homelessness, hunger, and hurt. It’s a powerful moment of awareness—and a chance to give back in a tangible way.

“Hospitality has always been about taking care of people – and that doesn’t end at our hotel doors. Working with Jessica Klaric and the team at HSBV has been eye-opening, showing me just how critical their work is in the Bow Valley. Partnering with HSBV, I’ve seen the difference this organization makes, and it’s been an honor for our team at Basecamp to support that mission. Whether it’s opening up rooms or helping with laundry, we’re proud to stand alongside HSBV in making sure everyone has a safe place to land.”

How You Can Help

If you’re reading this and wondering how to make a difference—start here.

Donate to the Homelessness Society of the Bow Valley

Donations to HSBV go directly toward essentials like hot meals, hygiene kits, and shelter staff. Donations will help sustain the Emergency Winter Shelter program, as well as a year-round outreach program that connects individuals with local supports and services. Contributions also provide sustainable funding to ensure the shelter doors remain open throughout the winter season. You can donate here, and charitable tax receipts are available.

Consider participating in Coldest Night of the Year

Taking place on February 28, 2025, this event is more than just a walk—it is a meaningful journey to raise funds for individuals experiencing hurt, hunger, and housing insecurity within the community. By participating in the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY), supporters directly contribute to vital Shelter and Outreach Programs, offering essential assistance to those in need. Community members are invited to form a fundraising team, make a donation, become a sponsor, or volunteer to help make a difference. Registration for the event is live, check it out here!

If you’re staying with us, our front desk team can also point you toward ways to support—whether that’s dropping off non-perishable food at the Community Cupboard or learning more about how to get involved locally. Sometimes, simply sharing HSBV’s story with others can be a first step toward advocacy.
